Doug The Thug was a doorman at a Harchester pub where Warren Masters was drinking one summer night in 1997. Warren saw Doug hit a woman and, having witnessed his own father be violent with his mother during his childhood, decided to teach him a lesson. Only Warren's lesson escalated into Doug receiving a smashed cheek bone and broken ribs. Warren was charged with assault, his most serious offence on his already-criminal-record and was facing prison for the first time now of age. In order to give him his best chances in court, Warren's probation officer Brenda talked him into giving Doug a personal apology. Warren goes through with this, at the same time against his wishes, and has to tolerate being wound-up by Doug, until Warren flips and has to be held back.

After youth team coach Frank Patcham speaks up for him, Warren walks free from court with 70 hours community service. But it appears Doug is never too far away, and when Warren sets up a burger van business with Conor, Doug makes it clear he is taking over and leaves Conor on the floor in a heap of tomato ketchup. Warren is determined for revenge, and goes to douse the trailer with petrol. Conor talks Warren out of it as Doug will know it was him, but Doug appears at that moment and the can is knocked over unseen, spilling petrol. When Doug tosses a match from lighting a cigarette, the petrol ignites and the burger van explodes in a fireball.

If Warren thought it would be the last he heard of Doug, he was wrong, and on the day he signs his professional contract with Harchester United, Doug ambushes him with a fellow heavy outside his flat. They have come to do Warren’s knees in with metal batons. Warren manages to make a quick getaway, only it involves him jumping from the balcony resulting in him suffering serious injury to his leg and out for the next season at the club.
