During the 1996-97 football season, Gary Pascoe was in Harchester United's academy. He became sidekick to his fellow team mate, Alex Wilkinson, though Alex had a devious streak and often lead the impressionable Gary into trouble. Frank Patcham was well aware of the bad influence the two were on each other, and Alex was eventually sent to a young offender’s home. After a year inside, and with the persuasion of Alex's mother, Frank agrees to give Alex another chance, and he and Gary are reunited at the youth team's new hostel.

It is back to old times as Alex takes a disliking to new goalie Hari Lal, especially when he is moved into he and Gary's room instead of Dion Osbourne. Alex and Gary snoop through Hari's suitcase, and Gary reminds Alex how in the past they'd 'hold court' for anyone causing trouble like Hari, which Alex takes pleasure in setting up again. Gary plays in the FA Youth Cup 3rd Round vs. Charlton Athletic but is off the scene shortly afterwards, and likely put out, after Alex has a new sidekick in Adi Coleman.
