A high-flying barrister who will fight fiercely for his clients, James is called when Karl Fletcher is arrested for the murder of former chairman Prashant Dattani, as the team are about to leave for the first leg of their very first Champions League campaign. When he is charged, James is loyal to Fletch and takes on his case, beginning with a successful plea for the striker to be allowed to play in that very game against Real Mallorca.

The most damning piece of evidence against Fletch is how Prash's blood was found on his tracksuit trousers, and the key witness placing Fletch in Dattani's office at the precise time is his old enemy Victoria Baptiste. At the trial, James learns not one but two bombshells Fletch has kept from him, the first when cross-examining Victoria that Fletch caved to her blackmail demand which she is now painting as a bribe to stay away from the trial. But the second, when Fletch has to concede that Victoria's story is true and he did indeed enter Prash's office but only after he'd been killed, after denying it for his whole case, is too damaging for James to now convince the jury of Fletch's innocence.

Fletch is predictably found guilty, but his vindication comes at that moment when Lynda Block confesses her own guilt in Prash's death. James continues to fight for Fletch's release, and at his appeal hearing Fletch walks free, thanking James for everything he's done for him.
