A scheming charmer always with his eye out for the best deal he could get for himself, before his clients, Joel was a colleague in the agenting world of Jeff Stein. The two are reacquainted when Joel visits The Dragon's Lair for a home game against Newcastle, and has come to check out a talent Harchester are keeping under wraps - Lee Presley. Lee is Jeff's discovery, but they cannot represent him until Nikki has qualified, and there is further trouble when Stuart plans to give Lee his debut showcasing him to the agenting world. When Jeff tries to stop Lee playing, Lee turns against him and is happy to go off with Joel after scoring at the game. Lee still thinks a lot of Nikki, and tells Joel he will sign with his agency Player Power on the condition that he takes Nikki on as well. Away from Lee, Joel has Nikki little more than a skivvy, there to organise the teas. Joel has booked Lee to appear in a TV ad selling mobile phones. Jeff sees that Joel is already manhandling Lee’s income, and arranges a fake boot advertising deal with Joel for 60K, telling Lee and Nikki to watch and see what happens. Joel informs Lee of the boot deal and tells him he will be receiving £5,000 from it. Jeff reveals that he was behind it all, and reminds Joel that an agent is supposed to receive 10% not 100%. Lee cuts his ties with Joel, but not before swiping his wallet to make up for what he was owed for the mobile ad.

The following season, Joel meets with Harchester's next manager Don Barker who is irked at chief exec Dean Boyle about to spend £7M on one big talent, when he could buy five good Championship players with that money. He and Joel plot to make Dean look a fool by setting up a hopeless transfer deal with Joel’s client Carlos Valdez, so Don will ultimately get his way and use Eli's money for the players he wants. Dean sees Joel on the news revealing how Valdez will be going to Chelsea, and learns Joel used him to get the price down to something Chelsea would be willing to pay, and Valdez would never have agreed to the personal terms at Harchester.

Later that season, Karl Fletcher offers Joel a chance to do business with Harchester again after Dean cut him off after Valdez, when they plan to have Barker removed from the managerial role. They use Fletch's old youth team mate Carl Caskey, who is out of contract as bait, and Joel tells Don how desperate the Caskey's are for Carl to get a contract, and will even slip Don some of the signing on fee. Don asks whether Joel just offered him a bribe, which Joel says he did. Don responds with how he won't accept anything less than 100 grand. Dean is worried about handing over their own cash to Joel, who shows them the spyware pen that doubles as a camera and will record Don’s actions. Don tells Joel he won't be signing Caskey and lets him know he's aware Fletch is involved in this. Don tells Joel he can have half of the bribe money for his co-operation and do Harchester's deals too. Joel goes back to Fletch and Dean and plays the tape, only all they get is static fuzz. Joel pretends he must have forgotten to switch it on and Dean flies at him, and Fletch adds Don now has their money in unmarked notes.
