Although Marlon had been a troublesome influence on Eugene Christie since they first met at six-years-old, Eugene had always been kept on the straight and narrow due to his talent in Charlton Athletic's academy, and the strong influence of his mother, Diane. It looked as though, by age eleven, Eugene would leave Marlon and his delinquent ways behind, as he progressed well in the academy with an on-pitch partner in Casper Rose. However, Diane's death in a road accident, and being left in a children's home by his real father Terry, saw Gene come to consider Marlon as the only one looking out for him, and he followed Marlon into his criminal activities.

Aged fourteen on Boxing Day 1997, the two burgled the Charlton academy office, but caught, saw Eugene reconnect with Casper, and escaping Marlon once more. After a good couple of years, things fell apart for Gene when he discovered Terry Rose had been his father all along, and a jealous Cass manipulated Eugene into choosing the chance to play for his dream club Liverpool over stopping girlfriend Jess from aborting his child. Feeling lost and alone again, Marlon was waiting on the sidelines, and within time, embedded himself deeper into Eugene's life when he married Marlon's sister, Scarlett.

As Eugene plowed away in the Charlton Athletic first team, another footballing connection to Marlon was Nathan Woods, on the cusp of being offered a professional contract with Harchester United. Regular first team goalie Viv Wright is having none of it, and tries to force Nathan to request a transfer. Marlon tells Nathan if Viv tries anything to come to him. After Nathan arrives home to find Viv has befriended his mother, he calls Marlon who brings his gang to teach Viv a lesson. While about to give him a pasting, the team arrive and discover what Nathan was a part of, leading to his exit from Harchester. As the Harchester United coach explodes, Marlon has enticed Eugene into another job - robbing an associate of boxes of brand new trainers. Eugene hides Marlon from the law, as at the same time, Harchester come calling, and on the day Eugene is due to sign, he and Marlon are both charged with the burglary.

As they await their day in court, Eugene is the winner of the mystery Harchester owner's million pound goal, which brings Marlon back on the scene, especially when he discovers Eugene has the money in cash sitting in his house. Before long, Marlon and Gene are plotting a fake robbery, which will see them keep the money. When Gene organises several of his Harchester colleagues to witness the "robbery", Scarlett arrives home unexpectedly, and their cover is blown. When volatile co-robber Lewis thinks Ashleigh has called the police, he points his gun and shoots Casper. In order to save Cass, and Eugene's career, the group agree to say they and Marlon were taken hostage by other robbers who have now gone.

Marlon and Eugene are both together in the dock for their trial, and it isn't long before Marlon shows his true colours and stitches Gene up to save himself, by admitting the robbery was something they both did. Cass persuades Scarlett to come through for Gene, and she testifies that Marlon would deliberately lie to bring down Eugene because he is jealous Eugene made something of his life. And it is Marlon's turn to now question how Scarlett could betray him. Marlon's sentence isn't revealed, but as it is mentioned Eugene was facing five years it is likely he received that outcome.
