Dean Boyle first encountered Shay Maguire a short time after Clyde Connelly's funeral. Leader of the club's Supporters Association, Shay is in agreement with Dean that Clyde's suicide follows what has been a dark season for the club, and Dean plans a new 'Super Dragon' signing to start a brighter future. When Don Barker prioritises a promotion-led Wigan game over the Champions League of PSG, Dean introduces a star-struck Shay to Tommy Valentine and they go on You're On Sky Sports to drum up support to get Wigan rescheduled. Shay shows his appreciation for Clyde by getting a tattoo of his name and number printed onto his bum cheek, and Tommy is introduced to Shay's wife Michelle. Shay wishes Tommy luck for PSG but is incensed to hear Barker has left him out, and sneaks onto the team coach in the guise of the driver. With Shay endangering the team on the motorway, Tommy brings Shay round with news that he is going to Juventus and Harchester are signing Carlos Valdez in return. Heading out to celebrate, Shay passes out drunk, and Michelle and Tommy spend the night together.

To get Shay out of the way, Tommy sends him to Spain before the team fly out, and making love on the boardroom table, Michelle takes pictures of their rendezvous. When Tommy ditches Michelle, and further humiliates Jodie Stone, Jodie sends Shay the pictures from Michelle's phone, which he receives in Barcelona. When Tommy comes on, Shay yells he is a dead man and is escorted out of the Nou Camp. At the Christmas party, Shay stabs Tommy in the back, but despite hearing Shay's voice in his ear, D.I. Macy cannot charge him as Shay has alibis for the time of the attack. Bo, Tommy's bodyguard, suggests that Shay could be taken care of in a way that he won't be around to complain about it. When Tommy hears Juventus have pulled out of the deal due to his injury, he gets on to Bo telling him he wants Shay dead. Tommy comes to regret this, and seeing Shay on the news he thinks the worst. Luckily, in the control room they see Shay taking his seat and are relieved.

A couple of months later Shay leads a group of rebel fans, the Harchester Cultural Reformation Committee, recruited by Don to force Eli Knox's hand in providing a new player having lost Tommy in a bet. Dean believes he's found the way to call them off - by duping the fans into believing they are about to sign West Ham striker Nigel Reo-Coker even though they cannot really buy him. After Harchester go 2-0 down to Southampton, rioting breaks out at the Lair where most of the HCRC are arrested.
