Exclusive Interview: Craig Robert Young

What was the best thing about being in Dream Team?  The fact that the cast and crew all got on so well. A lot of us were new to television work so the senior cast looked after us. They were a great team.

Were you a fan of Dream Team before you joined?  I hadn't seen the show prior to getting the part. I did however meet Terry Kiely at an awards ceremony. I was hosting a show on MTV and met some of the cast there, they were a nice bunch but I did know of it.

What were your likes and dislikes about your character?  I liked that Alex went against the grain; he was willing to take chances. He didn't think through his actions. He was very determinated. His downfall was that he didn't know his limits. There were no real dislikes though. I tried to justify his actions because of his upbringing and attempted to give him a heart.

What did your friends and family think of your role?  My dad and male friends thought he was cool; they loved the bad boy image. I'm from Nottingham originally so going back home and seeing my mates on a council estate gave me some credibility. The girls thought he was bad. My young nieces were scared and really thought he was bad.

Do you get recognized in the street from your role in Dream Team?  Haha the old ladies maybe giving me dirty looks. It was early days in the show though. We did get a certain amount of recognition as we all tended to go out as a group as we did all get on so well so people would see us as the team.

Which scenes did you enjoy/hate the most?  I liked the cafeteria scenes the most as we were all together, the café girls, the first team and the youth team all together. Also was we were shooting in winter it was nice to be inside haha. The downside was having to film in Watford when living in London so I had to get up early to catch the train for those early shoots.

Have you ever met any real footballers?  I played against some in matches and as we filmed at the West Ham stadium there were some there but I couldn't remember any names.

Which team do you support and why?  I have been a Notts. Forrest fan since I was 8 so I'm not going to be fickle and change my mind, I will be loyal.

What research did you carry out for your role?  Well he came from a youth offenders institute so I went to an institute in the east end to speak with the guys and learn the characteristics, not really get into their heads so much but just how they acted and get ideas. We also took part in some football training.

How would you rate yourself as a player?  Haha. I don't know. I like it and I enjoy it but I am not brilliant, I have balance and co-ordination though.

What was the hardest thing about the training?  It wasn't that hard as a lot of it was choreographed with such a person passing to another for them to score. The training before filming was tough. We trained with a guy called Roy Webber and it was an intensive 2/3 week football bootcamp.

What do you do to relax?  Well I have just bought my first home in Beverley Hills so I have been going that up, adding hardwood floors and tending to the patio. I have been living in the States since leaving Dream Team.

Where do you see yourself in ten years time?  Well I have a production company so there are lots of jobs in development, but I would love to continue to grow and evolve as an actor. I want to work with the best in the business be it actors or directors. I want to see more of the world and have lots more money haha. My heart is in acting and I like the thought process involved and creating new characters so I would like to continue with what I'm doing.

Is there any behind the scenes gossip that you have stored away that you care to share with us?  I can't remember any that probably hasn't been reported. I do have fond memories of the show and all the cast it may sound sweet but we all got on well but no juicy news.

What other jobs have done besides acting?  I was in a band called Deuce, I was told that Shane has now joined the show. I think its funny as we toured together for a while, it's a small world and its funny how it turns. I worked in a timber yard when I left school and actually have a degree in timber technology.

Who would be your ideal co-star?  Catherine Zeta Jones, Kirsten Dunst, Scarlett Johansen, Ryan Gosling, Robert De Niro.

If you could star in any reality show which would it be and why?  Survivor – I love that show and its huge here. Im not a big fan of other reality shows though.

What have you been up to since you left Dream Team?  Well besides the production company I have been in Charmed, the last ever episode of Sabrina the teenage Witch, SClub7's show, The District and films College Bound, Totally Sexy Loser, Wannabe which is about an English boy band singer who comes to the US to make it as an actor and Just for kicks where I play a football coach for a female football team, a bit like Bend It Like Beckham but on TV. And also Zoe 101 with Jamie-Lynn Spears

If you had the opportunity to return be it long or short term would you go back?  I would love to have Alex come out of the woodwork and surprise Fletch. They had an instant dislike for each other when they started in the youth club together.

Do you think your character could have continued for another season?   I was disappointed that he left. They could have taken Alex further but part of me was pleased as I had already made up my mind that I wanted to come to the US so if I hadn't of left I wouldn't be doing what I am now. But I would have liked to see him redeem himself and have him fight his demons. He could have gotten a girlfriend who calmed him down. But it seems a DT trait to only bring in characters for on season.

Were you pleased with the way your character was portrayed?  Yes, He was a juicy character and it was nice not to be charming and nice.

Do you keep in touch with any of the old cast?  Only Gary McDonald (John Black) and Phil Barratini (Billy) but say hello to Terry for me.

Which other Dream Team Character would you like to have played past or present?  You know what none. Alex was one of the best written characters that season, he was interesting, confident and had problems.

Have you continued to watch Dream Team since your departure?  No but I am aware that it is on over here.

Have you ever looked at any of the Dream Team Fan Sites?  Harchester.net. it's the only one isn't it??
