Exclusive Interview: Tim Smith

harchester.net (October 2004)

How has working on Dream Team compared to your previous acting roles?  Dream Team is different to any show I've worked on before. Like a real Team the banter is constant. There is also a really strong bond between cast and crew that has been built over years of working together. This is my 3rd series so I've made some great friends here. It's like going to school again and larking around with your mates all day. Wicked!

Who is the best actor you have ever worked with?  I've worked with some great actors on DT. Andrew Lincoln was excellent in Teachers. I've got a friend who I went to 'Carlton Television Workshop' in Nottingham with called Shauna Shim and she is an amazing actress. You can see her in 'Dogville' alongside Nicole Kidman!

Any chance of you teaming up with Chucky to launch an assault on the music charts?  Ha! Can you imagine me in a velour tracksuit? I think not. I'll leave the bling to Chux

How do you rate Notts Forrest's prospects this season? Do you still get to go to any matches?  Man it's depressing. Especially with Brian Clough passing away recently. I'm praying they'll turn it around this season. I used to have a season ticket but now I can't get to any games coz I'm working all the time. I'll be back though. C'mon you tricky trees do it for Cloughie!

Do you have any funny stories about filming?  Everyday on dream team is a laugh. That's the great thing about this job. Soon after starting the show, I was coming back from shooting a scene with the boys in a minibus and Whittle said 'Lets strip Tim!'. I had Tyson, Sexy, Ricky, Mack and Husbands, all of whom are big lads either side of me. 'yeah funny' I said stupidly. And next thing I know I'm standing outside the costume dept with no trousers or pants on, catching quite a nasty chill. Not so funny at the time but looking back at it, it was rather amusing. Later I came to realise, everyone gets done sooner or later on DT! And believe me; I've seen it happen to people a lot worse since. I was lucky!

What do you think of the new characters for season 8, upcoming storylines and the decision to relegate Harchester?  The new characters are wicked. All of em are sickeningly good looking which is quite bad really coz I was hoping they would get some ugly gits in to make me look good.

Would you ever grow a mullet?  Mullet? Like Chrissy Waddle Style? Great Question and quite apt seeing as my new head piece has been likened to a mullet! For the record though...it's not! Do you hear! It's NOT a mullet!

What is your favourite film/book/TV show?  Film-City of God. Book-Lord or the Rings. TV-The Office

Fletch or Davenport?  Sorry LD. Fletch all day long!!

Is it true that you used to live with Chris Parker?  Your sources are correct. God you're good.

Who would play you in a film about your life?  I think it would have to be 'Skreech' from 'Saved by the Bell'. I've been told he looks like me.

What do you like in a girl?  Me! Sorry that was a terrible joke. And also quite rude. But on a serious note, I like honest, genuine independent girls who can make me laugh. A strong liking for nights in with the playstation is a definite bonus!

Is it hard keeping up the illusion of being a premiership footballer at charity matches?  I think most people realise that I'm not quite Wayne Rooney in real life. After all, if I was I'd be Saving Forest from relegation and not mincing around on the tele. In fact I did play at the 'City Ground' recently (thanks to my good friend David 'Dangerous' Jacobs) And Scored a couple of real beauties. That was a dream come true.

Do you have any nicknames that are clean enough to share?  Yeah I've been given a few nick names, most of which I couldn't repeat or want to for that matter. Chux calls me 'Flim' and that seems to have stuck. Ans always calls me 'Slim'. The others have got some good ones though; I especially like Danny 'Dog Face' Husbands. Or Ricky 'Busy Whittle Bee'. I'm quite proud of that last one.

What was the first and last album who bought?  The first album I ever bought was U2's 'Achtung Baby',quality. And the last one was given to me by my flat mate, the new Beastie Boys CD. Those boy's may be knocking on a bit but they ain't lost it!

What are your top 5 favourite songs?  5 greatest songs of all time? Man that's a tough question. Er...I'd have to get a Sinatra tune in there. Definitely a Bob Marley track. Nivana's 'Smells like teen Spirit' always remind me of school. A bit of Drum and Bass would be in there, Roni Size's 'Brown Paper Bag' and finally Oasis with 'Talk tonight'. The only tune I can play on the guitar.

Would you prefer fame or fortune?  I think I'd go for fortune. Look at what fames done to Britney! She's in a right state. Didn't do Kurt Cobane much good either.

What are your likes and dislikes regarding Clyde?  I like Clyde's energy. He can be quite funny too in a 'he's a bit of an idiot' kind of way. He wears his heart on his sleeve which is also quite endearing. But I hate his arrogance and his thoughtlessness.

Were you a fan of Dream Team prior to joining the show?  I'd seen bits of Dream Team at mate's houses before a started working on the show. It was interesting to see being a massive football fan. I was always like...'Nar! they can't play!'. To be fair in hindsight I was wrong. There's some real Players at HUFC I can tell you.

Do you have any behind the scenes gossip that you would like to share?  Gossip? Well rumour has it that over the summer break a few of the Dream Team boy's were involved in a robbery. And I have it on good authority that it was caught on camera. And guess what? You can see it on 24th and 26th of October on BBC4 in a series called 'Days That Shook the World'. Don't miss it, DT fans will find it hilarious!

If you could play any other character who would it be and why?  I'm quite into Shakespeare; I really enjoyed it at Carlton TV Workshop. I'd love to play a Character in a period drama. Or a war film! That would be cool. Blowing stuff up. I've always secretly wanted to be in the army but I know that I'm too much of a wimp to actually do it.

What is your most embarrassing moment?  My most embarrassing moment was the day I got done on a show called 'Celebrity Snatch'. Jo Goldie, Cheyrl Mackie and Alex Lawler stitched me up big time. I went to a restaurant with them and this waiter kept putting cheese on my food, which I hate. Then he asked me to step outside with him because he wanted to beat me up for eyeing up his girlfriend! I was stunned. He later apologised, gave us a £100 bottle of champagne by mistake and asked me to pay for it. Cheek!!! When finally the set up was revealed, I was in a state of shock. It was so embarrassing, I kept thinking, 'what have I just said?!' But I had the last laugh because there was a problem with the girl's microphones and they couldn't show it on TV! Shame!

If you could create one storyline what would it be?  'Misty Remirez' played by Angelina Jolie falls in love with a cheeky, fresh faced 'Clyde Connelly'. They spend an entire episode rolling around in the surf on a remote paradise island. And that's about it really. How's that for a story line?

Which former cast members do you miss the most?  Jo Goldie 'Donna' and Cheryl Mackie 'Karen Boyle'. Two wonderfully talented actresses who I miss dearly. Despite the practical jokes.

Which three cast member would he save from a burning building?  Hey dude! You can't ask that! That means condemning all the rest to certain death! You're sick.

If you hadn't got into acting, what do you think you would be doing now?  Well I was supposed to go to Aston University at 18 to do a Marketing degree. But the fickled finger of fate pointed me towards a part in 'Teachers' and then I took up acting professionally. So if things have been different, I'd probably be sitting behind a desk right now thinking of ways to make people buy crap they don't need.

What other jobs have you done in the past besides acting?  Man I've done allsorts of jobs, from Burger King and Barman to Auctioneers Assistant.

Describe your perfect day from waking up in the morning until falling asleep at night.  Ok. I'm thinking big here... I'd start by being woken up in a beach hut by Heidi from the sugar babes singing softly on a tropical paradise island. I'd swim out to a beautiful yacht where lying in wait are all my best mates. We'd have breakie, full english, then Jump in a hot air balloon and get taken to the top of a snow capped mountain. There I'd find A Jacuzzi and a Bottle of the best champagne. After a relaxing spa I'd ski down to the bottom to a log cabin. Sitting around the raging fire would be the whole cast from the Star Wars Movies. Gorge Lucas would offer me a major role in the next instalment of the series over a Dinner. The Finest Thai cuisine. I'd say my farewells and hitch a lift on George's helicopter to Monaco and Blow a million pounds in a casino. All on the roll of one dice. Win or lose, Geeves, my butler would have my Lamborghini Diablo running outside to take me to the world cup final. Phew, I made it just in time for kick off and to see England smash Germany 5-1 (again!) After the match I'd go in to the changing rooms and congratulate the boys. Shaking Beckham's hand I would blush bashfully at him saying he was a 'great admirer' of my work. After which Me and the victorious 'Caged Tigers' would all hook up with my mates again at the winners party and Dance the night away to a live set by Dr Dre's entire Krew. Until it was time to get my private jet to Ibiza and watch the sun come up at Cafe Del Mar. hey that was quite good. I'm quite proud of that!

What do you most like doing in your spare time- in chill out mode?  I love chilling at home with the boys. A few beers, PS2, Fifa 2005 and Pro Evolution Soccer. You can't beat it.

If you could give 1 million pounds to a charity, which charity would you support and why?  If I had a million pounds to give to a charity it would be Cancer Relief.

What is your Star Sign?  Star sign- Cancer

What type of Mobile Phone do you have?  Some weird shaped Nokia thing. Couldn't tell you the name of the model.

And finally have you had any encounters with scary fans and also have you ever looked at any of the Harchester websites?  I wouldn't say scary. Funny yes. There was a girl on the tube once who started screaming, 'oh my god, Clyde, Clyde, oh my god!' When I past her on the escalator.I went on Harchester.net and saw that she had written that she had seen me. Funny! So yes in answer to the question, 'do I ever log on?' I used to more than I do now. It's good and can be helpful to anonymously get feed back on your work. Although sometimes it makes hard reading. Being compared to Franny Jeffers is never good. Sorry Francis but you ain't no oil painting! And I might just take this opportunity to tell PCS that his comments have only made me a stronger person! It's alright PCS. I forgive you!!!

Thank you very much for you time, it is very much appreciated.  Thanks for some Great Questions and all the support we receive from you at harchester.net. Keep coming to the games you guys, it's great to meet you all. Keep Watching the show. All the best.

Tim x
