Pavel Kovac was from the Czech Republic and playing as a striker for AC Milan. As the summer transfer window for the 2006-07 Premier League season neared its close, Chloe Tyler was keen on securing him as a big name signing for Harchester and securing her crown as the club's top agent up against the newly arrived Tony Franks. She knows Pavel is in London, with a story circulating of he having had a bust-up with his agent, and one year left on his contract with Milan, convinces him to come for talks with Harchester. Pavel is anxious about how Chloe discovered he was in London, but relaxes upon meeting his old friend Miguel Lopez, and when Alex tells the men he'd love to see them play together, if just once, Pavel agrees to sign. At his medical, the club doctor reports Pavel is in great physical condition and they only await his blood test results, though Pavel is still acting shifty.

Jason Porter, on a four-week trial, is pushing himself hard training, and Pavel comes over to give him some tuition. After Jason leaves Pavel in the showers, he is suddenly overcome by pain, and finds it hard to stand up. Pavel waits anxiously for a visit from the club doctor. After receiving the news, he goes to Alex's room and tells him he has been diagnosed with testicular cancer. This is why Pavel was in London, for tests, and he asks Alex for one thing - that he play him tomorrow, which Alex immediately agrees. Jason learns of Pavel's cancer, and is shocked that his new friend seems to have given up all hope, believing at twenty-eight he won't make it back playing. Jason tells Pavel he is a brilliant player and needs to get himself fit for when he himself is in the first team. Pavel slots in two goals on his debut against Newcastle, and singles out a proud Jason in the crowd.

Later, Amy informs new manager Jimmy Craig that Pavel is in hospital in Switzerland, having surgery for his cancer. As the season progresses, Pavel is out recovering, and Harchester Chronicle reporter Tom Magee refers to Jimmy losing Pavel out of his plans to illness.
