Clare and Leon Richards were teenagers in North London when she unexpectedly became pregnant with their son Clayton. Struggling with this new responsibility she and Leon did not stay together as a couple, and not making enough in the Arsenal youth set-up he was a part of, Leon took an extra job at nights to provide more. It had a bad effect on his form at Arsenal, tiredness affecting his ability and skill. After a year with the Gunners youth team Leon was let go, but he was luckily noticed by Premier League side Harchester United which meant he would be living away from Clayton up in the Midlands.

When some time goes by without Clare receiving money from Leon, she arrives at the Harchester academy late one night, and with no other option without money of his own, Leon reluctantly hands over a grand of the bribe money Billy was mistakenly handed by Jerry Block. Shortly afterwards, Clare returns and tells of how a Scottish man (Fraser) was asking questions about how she got the money, adding if the cash is connected to trouble she doesn't want it.

After Leon's secret of having a baby son is made public at the club, Clare spends more time in Harchester, and at the Christmas party is charmed by Alex Wilkinson, who is Leon's worst enemy. Clare gets a job working in the club's canteen alongside Leon's new girlfriend Julie, and Alex knows the most important thing to Leon is his son, so with him hanging around Clare, Leon has Alex's presence to fear. With Alex threatening Clayton's safety, Leon tells Clare but she thinks he is being jealous of her new relationship. With the FA Cup Final approaching, Leon disappears with Clayton, leaving Clare frantic with worry. Billy decides it's time Alex's mother Denise knew what her son had been doing to Leon, and Clare feels terrible about what Leon went through.

The following season, Leon is a permanent fixture in the first team and the future looked bright. Returning home from playing Ajax in the UEFA Cup, Leon along with Julie accepted Biloo Kapur's offer of a flight home on his private jet. The rest of the team arrive home to the news that the plane is missing, and all those on board are feared dead. Clare brings Clayton to the club's first game after the tragedy, where she tells a distraught Billy that she is having Clayton christened and in memory of Leon, wants him to be Godfather.
